taking a minute to brag

Despite the 2 degree difference between the two sides of the roof, I'm proud of getting so close. Look at the spot just over Dad's shoulder where the rafters meet the ridge pole. To get that to fit together so well, I had to figure out the size the ridge pole needed to be (13.75 inches -- I think -- so I used a 2x10 (remembering that the actual size is 1.5 x 9.5) and a 2x6 (1.5x5.5) for a total depth of 15 inches, then framed the wall (before adding the rafters), leaving space for the ridge pole to slip in and making sure that the pole rested on a 2x4 that was shorter than the top plates on either side so the ridge pole didn't extend above the rafters. I'm always amazed when I actually get the measurements correct, especially since I wasted about 5 headers by forgetting to add 3" to the size of the rough opening (so they rest on top of the jack studs rather than butt up against them).

Not bad for never having build a house before, if I do say so myself!

new toys!

Just because I can build a house with a chainsaw doesn't mean that I should! Plus, I don't know how I would have gotten the angles on the rafters anywhere close to correct without my wonderful new saw. The down side is that now I can tell that there is a 2 degree difference in pitch between the two sides of the gable roof.
