Flying monkeys?

Soon after I got to the land and started working, I looked up and saw a huge flock of turkey vultures take off from some nearby trees. It was spooky to see all of them together like that. Watching them circle in a swarm reminded me of the flying monkeys in the Wizard of Oz. I have never seen so many in such close proximity before. Could be deer entrails the hunters are leaving behind, but I wouldn’t have thought that would attract so many. There were definitely over 50, and I’d guess probably closer to 100.

Another fun, and less creepy nature discovery was finding a dark, slimy frog in the soft mud that I was digging out (again) to make space for the sewage pipe. I pulled up a clump of mud and there he (she?) was. I don’t know how I managed to miss him with the posthole digger.

I also noticed how acutely aware of the weather I am nowadays. I was thinking about that as I was trying to string up the enormous tarp in the dark (which I ultimately abandoned, as it became clear that it was likely to be as (un)successful as my previous two attempts at keeping the water out).
